We offer various short-term mission trips in Kenya and Uganda throughout the year for those 17 and older. These trips can range from two weeks to four months depending on your schedule and availability. While on the ground, you will be supporting and working with our national staff. (Wonder what you might do on a trip? Check it out here!) There may not be a big project going on during your visit, but honestly, your fellowship, energy, and encouragement are more important in helping support the staff in their long-term efforts of poverty alleviation. Our prayer is that this short-term trip turns into long-term engagement in missions either local or abroad.
We allow all volunteers to design the dates of their trip. Whether you can only take two weeks off work or want to experience a summer in East Africa, our programs run throughout the year. All that we ask is that you arrive and leave on a Monday and arrive during the day. You will be assisted in booking your flight arrangements and we will take care of picking you up at the airport upon arrival in Africa.
Once you arrive, you will join a group of people from all over the world to work alongside the Ugandan and Kenyan staff who run operations on the ground in communities we serve. You will find it an enriching experience to meet new friends from all over the world as you live, minister, and share meals together while learning about different cultures. Even though you’re thousands of miles from home, as a volunteer, you will find an amazing sense of community and form lifelong bonds with other volunteers and our national staff.
Poverty is complex; it is a social, spiritual, material, and personal problem. You won’t solve it on a short-term trip but don’t be discouraged! Your fellowship, energy, and encouragement are important in supporting the staff in their long-term efforts. Poverty alleviation is tough work and we need your help! We also have seen how Jesus uses short-term trips to change lives by getting volunteers out of their comfort zones, focusing them on Christ, and allowing Him to give you a new heart. Our prayer is that by the end of the trip you would understand we are all poor and broken, just in different ways, and that you would engage in long-term missional efforts either local or aboard using what you learned on the trip.
We try to make the cost of our trips as reasonable as possible. There are two fees: an administration fee; and a mission fee payable to Empower a Child based on the length of time you plan to serve. The mission fee covers all the basic things you will need on the ground including housing, food, and required transport. The application fee is due to the U.S. office two weeks after your application is approved. The mission fees are due to the U.S. office at least 45 days prior to arrival in Africa. If this trip is God’s will then He will provide you with the necessary funding. Click here for some helpful fundraising ideas.
